news.google.com is
a good way to get a glimpse of U.S. news as well as news local
to Austrailia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, India, Italy, France and Germanythe last
three in Italian, French, and German. You can click on stories categorized by World,
a national page for each nation, Business, Sci/Tech, Sport, Entertainment, and Health.
So if you're in the U.S. sports page, you'll find stories about the NFL; in Britain,
rugby and in France, de football (soccer). Scroll down to the bottom to click on
the nation of interest.
As expected, you'll find a lot of cross-referencing and common stories across all the
categories, especially Business, Sci/Tech, and Health, as these are, by definition,
globally interconnected. So everybody's got the same story on Gate's No. 1 status as
richest man in the world yet again, Gallileo's self-destruct into Jupiter, and the
primary risk factors associated with stomach cancer.
But it's the "national page" that's got the interesting tidbits. For example, on the
India page that ran the day this site was reviewed, there was a story about an Indian
princess who was kidnapped, sold into slavery in Mexico and almost became a saint.
Then on the German page, where Blair, Chirac, and Schroeder are having a few laughs
together in a cozy three-way summit (Harmonischer Dreiergipfel). Finally, British
model Paula Hamilton's on thin ice with New Zealand's Immigration Service after her
second DUI (drink-driving, they call it) conviction.
